Ronald J. Ruggiero, M.D., is a health sciences clinical professor of pharmacy and a pharmacist specialist in women's health with the departments of clinical pharmacy and obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Medical Center. Ruggiero received his Doctor of Pharmacy from the UCSF School of Pharmacy in 1969 and joined the faculty in 1970. In 1974 he developed a teaching site in the ob-gyn clinic and has been a pioneer in the role of the clinical pharmacist in women's health. He specialized in the pharmacotherapies of women for 28 years and was the resident project director of the UCSF National Center of Excellence (COE).
Ruggiero's expertise has been used by Merck Medco Managed Care, Family P.A.C.T. of California, the San Francisco Health Plan, the Pharmacy Access Partnership, the Foundation for Osteoporosis Research and Education (FORE), numerous pharmaceutical companies, the North American Menopause Society, the USP-DI, MicroMedex, the Rx Consultant, the Pharmacist's Letter, the Prescriber's Letter, as well as many journals and other publications. His research in the co-management of oral contraceptive and hormonal replacement therapy patients has documented the value of pharmacist interventions in increasing patient compliance and satisfaction with their pharmacotherapies.
Since retiring from clinical practice in 2003, Ruggiero has continued to serve as a consultant to government and private organizations and the pharmaceutical industry, as an expert witness, medical literature reviewer, and lecturer. In 2009 he once again became faculty advisor to and organized the UCSF multidisciplinary elective, Women's Health Issues, for the UCSF Women's Health Organization.
